Monroe County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 46,751. Its county seat is Sparta. The county was created in 1854 and named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Monroe County has a total area of 908 square miles (2,350 km²), of which 901 square miles (2,330 km²) is land and 7.0 square miles (18 km²) (0.8%) is water. The county is part of the Driftless Area, a region that was not glaciated during the last ice age, resulting in a landscape of rolling hills and valleys.

As of the 2020 census, there were 46,751 people, 18,000 households, and 12,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 51.9 people per square mile (20/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of Black or African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.
