Montauk
Montauk is a hamlet located in Suffolk County, New York, on the eastern tip of Long Island. It is known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and as a popular destination for fishing.
History[edit | edit source]
Montauk's history dates back to the Native American era, specifically the Montaukett tribe. The Montaukett were a tribe of Algonquian-speaking Indians who lived in the area of Montauk Point. They were part of the larger Algonquin linguistic group that extended from Virginia to Canada.
In the 17th century, European settlers began to arrive in Montauk. The area was initially purchased by English settlers from the Montaukett tribe in 1648. The settlers established a whaling industry and later, a fishing industry, which continues to thrive today.
