Morus alba

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Morus alba, commonly known as the white mulberry, is a fast-growing, small to medium-sized mulberry tree which grows to 10–20 m tall. It is native to northern China, and is widely cultivated and naturalized elsewhere.

Description[edit | edit source]

The white mulberry is a deciduous tree that can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters. The tree's bark is smooth and light grey, and the leaves are alternately arranged, lobed or unlobed, and have a serrated margin. The fruit, which is produced in spring, is a multiple fruit, 2–3 cm long. The fruits are white, but can be pinkish or purple in some varieties.

Cultivation and uses[edit | edit source]

Morus alba is widely cultivated to feed the silkworms employed in the silk industry. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine and is being investigated for its potential health benefits, including its potential use in the treatment of diabetes.

Invasive species[edit | edit source]

In some areas, Morus alba is considered an invasive species, as it can easily spread and outcompete native plants.
