Moscow is the capital city and the largest city of Russia. It is also one of the largest cities in the world and a major political, economic, cultural, and scientific center in Russia and Eastern Europe. As of the latest census, Moscow has a population of over 12 million residents within the city limits and over 17 million within the urban area, making it the most populous city in Russia and Europe.

The history of Moscow dates back to 1147, when it was first mentioned in the chronicles. Founded by Yuri Dolgorukiy, Moscow was initially a small town on the Moskva River, which later grew in importance and size, eventually becoming the center of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. In the 15th century, under the rule of Ivan III, Moscow became the capital of the Russian Empire, significantly influencing the political and cultural landscape of Russia.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, making it one of the coldest megacities in the world. The city covers an area of approximately 2,511 square kilometers. Moscow is surrounded by the Moscow Oblast in all directions, except for the enclave of the City of Zelenograd.

The political structure of Moscow is defined by the Charter of the City of Moscow, which establishes the city as a separate federal subject of Russia. The highest executive body is the Mayor of Moscow, supported by the Moscow City Government. Legislative power is vested in the Moscow City Duma.

Moscow has a highly developed transportation network, including the Moscow Metro, one of the deepest underground metro systems in the world known for its ornate stations. The city also has extensive bus, tram, and trolleybus systems, along with several airports, including Sheremetyevo International Airport, Domodedovo International Airport, and Vnukovo International Airport, facilitating domestic and international travel.

The city is a significant sports center, hosting numerous sports clubs and facilities. Moscow has hosted several international sporting events, including the 1980 Summer Olympics and matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The city is home to famous sports clubs like FC Spartak Moscow, PFC CSKA Moscow, and FC Lokomotiv Moscow.
