Moscow Oblast (Russian: Московская область , Moskovskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It is located in the central part of the country and surrounds the federal city of Moscow, which is the capital of Russia. Moscow Oblast is one of the most economically developed regions in Russia and plays a significant role in the country's economy.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Moscow Oblast is situated in the central part of the East European Plain. It is bordered by Tver Oblast to the north, Yaroslavl Oblast to the northeast, Vladimir Oblast to the east, Ryazan Oblast to the southeast, Tula Oblast to the south, Kaluga Oblast to the southwest, and Smolensk Oblast to the west. The oblast completely surrounds the city of Moscow, which is a separate federal subject.

The region is characterized by a temperate continental climate, with cold winters and warm summers. The terrain is mostly flat, with some hills and lowlands. The main rivers in the oblast include the Moskva River, the Oka River, and the Klyazma River.

Moscow Oblast was established on January 14, 1929, as part of the administrative reorganization of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). The oblast was formed from parts of the former Moscow Governorate and other surrounding territories. Throughout its history, Moscow Oblast has been a center of industrial and economic development.
