Mt. Harlan AVA[edit | edit source]

The Mt. Harlan AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in San Benito County, California. It is recognized for its unique terroir and the high-quality wine it produces, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Mt. Harlan AVA is situated in the Gabilan Mountains, a range that runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean. The region's high elevation, ranging from 1,200 to 2,200 feet, and its limestone-rich soils contribute to the distinct character of its wines. The climate is typically cool and dry, with a significant diurnal temperature variation that allows for slow, even ripening of the grapes.

History[edit | edit source]

The Mt. Harlan AVA was established in 1990, following the success of the Calera Wine Company, which was founded by Josh Jensen in 1975. Jensen recognized the potential of the region's limestone soils, similar to those found in the Burgundy region of France, for producing high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

The vineyards in the Mt. Harlan AVA are planted on steep slopes and are farmed using sustainable practices. The region's limestone soils, cool climate, and high elevation contribute to the production of wines with high acidity, complex flavors, and good aging potential. The primary grape varieties grown are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, although small amounts of Viognier, Aligoté, and Syrah are also produced.

Wineries[edit | edit source]

The most notable winery in the Mt. Harlan AVA is the Calera Wine Company, which has played a significant role in establishing the region's reputation. Other wineries in the region include the Mt. Harlan Vineyards and the Harlan Estate.
