Murree Brewery[edit | edit source]

Murree Brewery is one of the oldest and most prominent breweries in Pakistan. Established in 1860 during the British colonial era, it is the only legal producer of beer and spirits in the country. The brewery is located in Rawalpindi, Punjab, and is named after the hill station of Murree, where it was originally established.

History[edit | edit source]

The Murree Brewery was established in 1860 by Edward Dyer, the father of Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer, who is infamous for his role in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The brewery was initially set up to cater to the needs of the British personnel stationed in the northern parts of the subcontinent. After the partition of India in 1947, the brewery was moved to its current location in Rawalpindi.

Products[edit | edit source]

Murree Brewery produces a wide range of alcoholic beverages, including beer, whisky, brandy, and non-alcoholic products such as juices and glassware. The brewery's flagship product is its Murree Beer, which is a popular choice among consumers in Pakistan and abroad. Other notable products include Murree's Classic Lager, Millennium Brew, and Murree's Vodka.

Operations[edit | edit source]

The operations of Murree Brewery are regulated by the Government of Pakistan, which has imposed strict laws on the production and consumption of alcohol in the country. Despite these restrictions, the brewery has managed to thrive and expand its operations over the years. It operates two breweries in Rawalpindi and Hattar Industrial Estate near Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Market Presence[edit | edit source]

Murree Brewery has a significant market presence in Pakistan, despite the country's strict laws on alcohol consumption. The company also exports its products to several countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. It has also made efforts to enter the Indian market, given the historical connection between the brewery and the subcontinent.
