Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal system is the system of an organism that provides it with the ability to move using the muscular and skeletal systems. It consists of the body's bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue. The musculoskeletal system's primary functions include supporting the body, allowing motion, and protecting vital organs.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The musculoskeletal system includes all the muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues in the body. The skeletal system is the framework of the body, providing structure and support. The muscular system is responsible for movement, both voluntary and involuntary.
Bones[edit | edit source]
Bones are rigid organs that form the skeleton. They support and protect the various organs of the body, produce red and white blood cells, and store minerals. Bone tissue is a type of dense connective tissue.
Muscles[edit | edit source]
Muscles are tissues that contract to produce movement. They are primarily responsible for maintaining and changing posture, locomotion, as well as movement of internal organs.
Joints[edit | edit source]
Joints are the location at which bones connect. They provide the means for movement. Joints can be classified by either structure or function. Structural classifications include fibrous, cartilaginous, and synovial joints. Functional classifications include immovable (synarthrosis), slightly movable (amphiarthrosis), and freely movable (diarthrosis) joints.
Connective Tissues[edit | edit source]
Connective tissues are fibrous tissues that support, bind, or separate more specialized tissues and organs of the body. They include tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.
Function[edit | edit source]
The musculoskeletal system's primary functions are to support the body, allow motion, and protect vital organs. The skeletal system provides a framework for the muscles and tissues, while the muscular system enables movement.
Diseases and Disorders[edit | edit source]
There are many diseases and disorders that can affect the musculoskeletal system, including arthritis, osteoporosis, and muscular dystrophy. These can result in pain, decreased mobility, and a decreased quality of life.
