Myeloid

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Myeloid is a term that pertains to the bone marrow or to cells that originate from the bone marrow. The term is derived from the Greek word "myelos" which means marrow. Myeloid tissue is a type of tissue found in the bone marrow which is responsible for producing cells that circulate in the blood and lymphatic systems.

Myeloid Cells[edit | edit source]

Myeloid cells are a category of blood cells that are derived from myeloid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. They include granulocytes, monocytes, erythrocytes, and megakaryocytes. These cells play crucial roles in the immune system and in the maintenance of homeostasis in the body.

Granulocytes[edit | edit source]

Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell that have granules in their cytoplasm. They are part of the innate immune system and are involved in the body's first line of defense against pathogens. There are three types of granulocytes: neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils.

Monocytes[edit | edit source]

Monocytes are the largest type of white blood cell and are part of the immune system. They are produced in the bone marrow and then enter the bloodstream, where they can migrate to tissues and differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells.

Erythrocytes[edit | edit source]

Erythrocytes, also known as red blood cells, are the most common type of blood cell. They are responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Megakaryocytes[edit | edit source]

Megakaryocytes are large cells in the bone marrow that produce platelets, which are essential for blood clotting.

Myeloid Diseases[edit | edit source]

There are several diseases that affect the myeloid cells, including myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and myeloproliferative neoplasms. These diseases are often characterized by an overproduction of one or more types of myeloid cells.
