NCSL

NCSL or National Conference of State Legislatures is a bipartisan non-governmental organization established in 1975. It serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states, its commonwealths and territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues.

The National Conference of State Legislatures was founded in 1975 with the goal of improving the quality and effectiveness of state legislatures, promoting policy innovation and communication among state legislatures, and ensuring state legislatures a strong, cohesive voice in the federal system.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The NCSL is governed by a Executive Committee which is composed of legislative leaders from across the country. The Executive Committee is responsible for the general supervision and control of the affairs of the Conference.

Functions[edit | edit source]

NCSL's primary functions include:

  • Advocacy: NCSL serves as a formidable lobbying force in Washington, D.C., and continually tracks federal statute and regulation activity in areas that are of importance to state governments.
  • Technical Assistance: NCSL offers advice to states on how to manage and operate their legislatures, improve their operations, and meet new challenges.
  • Training: NCSL conducts educational seminars and workshops for both legislators and legislative staff.
