NHS Nightingale Hospital North East
NHS Nightingale Hospital North East is a temporary hospital established in the United Kingdom as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is one of seven NHS Nightingale Hospitals set up by NHS England to handle the increased demand for hospital beds during the pandemic.
Location and Facilities[edit | edit source]
The NHS Nightingale Hospital North East is located in the Sunderland International Innovation Centre, in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The facility has a capacity of up to 460 beds, although as of 2021, it has not been used to its full capacity.
Operation[edit | edit source]
The hospital is operated by the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It is staffed by a team of NHS professionals, including nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and other healthcare staff. The hospital is designed to provide care for patients who are in the recovery phase of COVID-19 and do not require intensive care.
History[edit | edit source]
The NHS Nightingale Hospital North East was officially opened on 5 May 2020 by Prince Charles, who conducted the opening ceremony remotely due to the pandemic. The hospital was set up in just three weeks, with the help of the British Army.
