Naldecon

Naldecon is a brand of over-the-counter pharmaceutical drug used to treat symptoms of the common cold and flu. It is manufactured by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.

Composition[edit | edit source]

Naldecon is a combination medicine that contains three active ingredients: Phenylephrine, Dextromethorphan, and Acetaminophen.

  • Phenylephrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).
  • Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.
  • Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and a fever reducer.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Naldecon is used to relieve symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, allergies, or other breathing illnesses (such as sinusitis, bronchitis). The decongestant in Naldecon can relieve stuffy nose, the cough suppressant can relieve cough, and the pain reliever/fever reducer can relieve minor aches and pains, headache, fever, and sore throat.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Naldecon may include mild headache, feeling restless or excited (especially in children), sleep problems (insomnia), or skin rash or itching. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe dizziness, anxiety, restless feeling, or nervousness.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before taking Naldecon, it is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any of its ingredients; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Some products that may interact with Naldecon include: beta blockers (such as atenolol), tricyclic antidepressants (such as amitriptyline), and other drugs that can cause drowsiness (such as antihistamines, anti-seizure drugs, medicine for sleep or anxiety, muscle relaxants, and narcotic pain relievers).
