Nathaniel Bradstreet Shurtleff (June 22, 1810 – October 17, 1874) was an American politician, physician, and historian who served as the 20th Mayor of Boston from 1868 to 1871. He was also a prominent figure in the field of genealogy and historical research.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Nathaniel B. Shurtleff was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 22, 1810. He attended the Boston Latin School and later graduated from Harvard University in 1831. He pursued a medical degree at the Harvard Medical School, graduating in 1834.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Shurtleff began practicing medicine in Boston. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and contributed to various medical journals. Despite his successful medical career, Shurtleff's interests extended beyond medicine to include history and genealogy.

Historical and Genealogical Work[edit | edit source]

Shurtleff was an avid historian and genealogist. He was a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and served as its president from 1867 to 1873. He edited and published several important historical documents, including the Records of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Shurtleff entered politics as a member of the Boston City Council and later served as the 20th Mayor of Boston from 1868 to 1871. During his tenure, he focused on improving the city's infrastructure, including the expansion of the Boston Public Library and the development of the Boston Common.

Nathaniel B. Shurtleff married Sarah Eliza Smith in 1834, and they had several children. He was known for his dedication to public service and his contributions to the historical and genealogical communities.
