National Board Dental Examination

National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) is a comprehensive examination that dental students in the United States must pass to become licensed to practice dentistry. It is designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for the safe practice of dentistry. The examination is divided into two parts: Part I and Part II.

Overview

The NBDE is administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), a part of the American Dental Association (ADA). NBDE Part I

NBDE Part II

Part II of the NBDE assesses the candidate's knowledge of clinical dental subjects. Part II is usually taken during the final year of dental school.

Format

Both parts of the NBDE are computer-based and consist of multiple-choice questions. Part I is a two-day examination, while Part II is administered over a day and a half. The exams are offered at various testing centers throughout the country.

Eligibility

Eligibility to take the NBDE is generally limited to candidates who are on track to earn or have already earned a degree from an accredited dental school in the United States or Canada. Foreign-trained dentists may also be eligible to take the NBDE if they meet certain requirements.
