National Board Dental Examination

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) is a comprehensive examination that dental students in the United States must pass to become licensed to practice dentistry. It is designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential for the safe practice of dentistry. The examination is divided into two parts: Part I and Part II.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The NBDE is administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE), a part of the American Dental Association (ADA). The purpose of the examination is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dentists who seek licensure to practice dentistry. The exams are comprehensive in nature, covering a wide range of topics in dentistry and biomedical sciences.

NBDE Part I[edit | edit source]

Part I of the NBDE focuses on the biomedical sciences relevant to dentistry. It includes sections on anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, and dental anatomy and occlusion. This part of the examination is typically taken after the second year of dental school.

NBDE Part II[edit | edit source]

Part II of the NBDE assesses the candidate's knowledge of clinical dental subjects. This includes topics such as endodontics, operative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, radiology, and patient management. Part II is usually taken during the final year of dental school.

Format[edit | edit source]

Both parts of the NBDE are computer-based and consist of multiple-choice questions. Part I is a two-day examination, while Part II is administered over a day and a half. The exams are offered at various testing centers throughout the country.

Eligibility[edit | edit source]

Eligibility to take the NBDE is generally limited to candidates who are on track to earn or have already earned a degree from an accredited dental school in the United States or Canada. Foreign-trained dentists may also be eligible to take the NBDE if they meet certain requirements.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

Preparation for the NBDE involves a thorough review of the subjects covered by the exam. Many students use review books, study groups, and online resources to prepare. The JCNDE also provides an official guide and practice exams to help candidates prepare.

Scoring[edit | edit source]

The NBDE is scored on a pass/fail basis. The exact passing score is determined by a panel of experts and is subject to change. Candidates who do not pass the examination can retake it, subject to certain restrictions.

Impact[edit | edit source]

Passing the NBDE is a critical step in the process of becoming a licensed dentist in the United States. It is one of several requirements, including graduation from an accredited dental school and passing a clinical examination, that candidates must meet to obtain licensure.
