Rand Paul (born January 7, 1963) is a U.S. Senator representing the state of Kentucky and a trained ophthalmologist. He is known for his libertarian-leaning political philosophy and his advocacy for a smaller government with limited intervention.[1]
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rand Paul is the son of former U.S. Representative Ron Paul of Texas. He attended Baylor University but did not graduate, instead being accepted early into Duke University School of Medicine where he received his M.D. degree in 1988.[1]
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center, Paul practiced medicine in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1995, he founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, a non-profit providing eye exams and surgeries to those in need. Paul is board-certified in ophthalmology and was re-certified in 2005 by the National Board of Ophthalmology, a certifying organization he helped establish.[2]
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Rand Paul entered politics in 2010 when he ran for and won a seat in the U.S. Senate from Kentucky. He is a member of the Republican Party and has been noted for his stances on issues such as fiscal conservatism, privacy rights, and criminal justice reform. Paul has often clashed with both Democrats and Republicans over his libertarian views, and he has been a vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy and government surveillance programs.[3]
