National Hospital Insurance Fund
National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a government agency in Kenya responsible for providing health insurance to Kenyans over the age of 18. Established in 1966, the NHIF is a key player in the healthcare industry in Kenya, providing financial protection against the cost of illness and medical procedures.
History[edit | edit source]
The National Hospital Insurance Fund was established in 1966 as a department under the Ministry of Health. The NHIF was initially designed to provide health insurance coverage for those in the formal sector, but it has since expanded to cover those in the informal sector as well.
Coverage[edit | edit source]
The NHIF provides coverage for a range of medical services, including inpatient care, outpatient care, maternity care, surgical procedures, and specialized treatments. The fund also covers prescription medications, laboratory tests, and medical imaging services.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in the NHIF is mandatory for all Kenyans over the age of 18 who are in gainful employment. Those who are self-employed or in the informal sector can also join the NHIF on a voluntary basis. Members contribute a monthly premium, which is determined by their income level.
Challenges[edit | edit source]
Despite its significant role in the Kenyan healthcare system, the NHIF has faced several challenges. These include issues with fraud, corruption, and inefficiencies in the administration of the fund. There have also been concerns about the sustainability of the NHIF, given the rising costs of healthcare in Kenya.
Future Plans[edit | edit source]
The NHIF is currently undergoing reforms to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. These reforms include the introduction of a new information technology system to streamline operations and the implementation of measures to combat fraud and corruption.
