National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the largest biomedical library in the world. It is located in Bethesda, Maryland, USA and is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The NLM, originally called the Library of the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army, was established in 1836. It was renamed the National Library of Medicine in 1956.

Collections[edit | edit source]

The NLM houses a vast print collection and produces electronic information resources on a wide range of topics. It provides access to biomedical and health information to scientists, health professionals and the public.

Services[edit | edit source]

The NLM offers a number of services including the PubMed database, MEDLINE, PubMed Central, and the Visible Human Project. It also supports and conducts research, development, and training in biomedical informatics and health information technology.
