National Survey Of Health & Development

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

National Survey of Health & Development (NSHD), also known as the 1946 British birth cohort study, is a longitudinal study that has been following the health and development of a group of people born in England, Scotland and Wales during one week in March 1946. The study has been providing valuable insights into the long-term effects of childhood circumstances, experiences, and behaviours on adult health and wellbeing.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The National Survey of Health & Development was initiated by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in 1946. The original aim of the study was to investigate the social and obstetric factors affecting the health and survival of babies and mothers. The study has since been expanded to include a wide range of health and development outcomes.

Methodology[edit | edit source]

The NSHD initially included 5,362 individuals who have been followed up at regular intervals since their birth. The study uses a combination of questionnaires, interviews, and physical examinations to collect data on various aspects of health and development, including physical health, mental health, cognitive function, social function, and lifestyle factors.

Findings[edit | edit source]

The NSHD has produced a wealth of data that has been used in numerous research studies. Some of the key findings from the study include the impact of early life factors on adult health, the role of lifestyle factors in health and disease, and the influence of social and economic circumstances on health outcomes.

Criticisms[edit | edit source]

Despite its many contributions, the NSHD has also faced some criticisms. These include the potential for selection bias due to the loss of participants over time, and the lack of ethnic diversity in the study sample.
