The National emblem of Azerbaijan is one of the national symbols of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It was officially adopted on January 19, 1993, following the country's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The emblem is a symbol of the sovereignty and heritage of Azerbaijan.

Design[edit | edit source]

The emblem features a combination of traditional and modern elements. At its center is a flame, which represents the nickname of Azerbaijan, the "Land of Fire." This is due to the country's rich reserves of natural gas and the historical significance of fire in Azerbaijani culture and Zoroastrianism.

Surrounding the flame is an eight-pointed star, known as the Rub el Hizb, which is a common symbol in Islamic art and represents the eight branches of the Turkic peoples. The star is colored in the national colors of Azerbaijan: blue, red, and green. These colors symbolize the Turkic heritage, progress, and Islam, respectively.

The background of the emblem is a circular shield with a border of oak and olive branches, symbolizing strength and peace. The base of the emblem features a stylized representation of a wheat ear, which signifies the agricultural richness of the country.

Historical Background[edit | edit source]

The current emblem of Azerbaijan has its roots in the emblem used during the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920). After the establishment of the Soviet regime, the emblem was replaced by the symbols of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan restored its independence and adopted the current emblem to reflect its national identity and heritage.

Usage[edit | edit source]

The national emblem of Azerbaijan is used by various government institutions, including the President of Azerbaijan, the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, and other state bodies. It is also featured on official documents, currency, and other state symbols.
