Navara rice
Navara Rice is a unique variety of rice indigenous to the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the many types of Oryza sativa, which is commonly known as Asian rice. Navara rice is renowned for its medicinal properties and is used in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine.
History[edit | edit source]
Navara rice has been cultivated in India for over 2000 years. It is mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic texts like the Charaka Samhita and Susruta Samhita, which highlight its therapeutic properties. The rice is traditionally grown in the Palakkad district of Kerala, where the unique climate and soil conditions contribute to its distinctive qualities.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Navara rice is typically cultivated during the monsoon season, between June and November. The cultivation process is labor-intensive and requires careful management of water resources. The rice is harvested after 60 to 75 days of sowing. Despite the challenges, farmers continue to grow Navara rice due to its high market value and demand in the Ayurvedic industry.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Navara rice is characterized by its small size, red color, and hardy nature. It has a sweet taste and a unique aroma. The rice is rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals, making it highly nutritious. It also contains certain phytochemicals that contribute to its medicinal properties.
Medicinal Uses[edit | edit source]
In Ayurveda, Navara rice is used in a treatment method known as Navara Kizhi, where the rice is cooked in a herbal decoction and used for body massage. This treatment is believed to rejuvenate the body and cure various ailments like arthritis, paralysis, and neurological disorders. The rice is also used in dietary therapy for conditions like diabetes and hypertension.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
The cultivation of Navara rice has declined over the years due to factors like urbanization and the introduction of high-yielding varieties. However, efforts are being made to conserve this traditional rice variety. The Kerala Agricultural University has established a Navara Rice Conservation and Research Centre to promote its cultivation and study its medicinal properties.
