Neal Baer (born 1955) is an American pediatrician and television writer best known for his work on the medical drama ER and the police procedural Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He has also served as an executive producer on several television series.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Baer was born in Denver, Colorado. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a degree in political science. He later attended Harvard Medical School, where he received his M.D. degree. Baer also holds a master's degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

After completing his medical training, Baer worked as a pediatrician in various hospitals. His medical background has significantly influenced his writing, particularly in the creation of realistic medical scenarios for television.

Baer began his television career as a writer and producer for the NBC medical drama ER. He joined the show in its first season and contributed to its success over several years. His work on ER earned him multiple Emmy Award nominations.

In 2000, Baer joined the writing team of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where he served as an executive producer and showrunner. Under his leadership, the show tackled numerous social issues, including sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.

Baer has also worked on other television projects, including Designated Survivor and Under the Dome.
