Negeri Sembilan
Negeri Sembilan is one of the 13 states of Malaysia. It is located on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, south of Kuala Lumpur and borders Selangor on the north, Pahang in the east, and Melaka and Johor to the south.
The name "Negeri Sembilan" means "Nine States" in Malay, which is derived from the nine districts or luak that were once under the rule of the Minangkabau people. The Minangkabau roots are still evident today as the state is known for its rich Minangkabau culture, notably in its architecture and cuisine.
History[edit]
Negeri Sembilan was originally settled by the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra who immigrated to this area in the 15th century. Under the leadership of the first Yang di-Pertuan Besar or the ruler of Negeri Sembilan, the state was recognised by its neighbouring territories.
Geography[edit]
Negeri Sembilan spans over an area of 6,645 square kilometres and is predominantly hilly. The state's highest point is the Gunung Datuk while its lowest point is at the coastal area of Port Dickson.
Economy[edit]
The state's economy is largely based on agriculture, manufacturing industries and tourism. The main agricultural products are rubber, palm oil and tobacco while the manufacturing sector produces electrical and electronics products, textiles, and furniture.
Culture[edit]
The culture of Negeri Sembilan is heavily influenced by the Minangkabau traditions, which can be seen in the unique architectural style of the Rumah Gadang, a traditional Minangkabau house, and in the spicy and tangy food.
Cuisine[edit]
Negeri Sembilan is famous for its traditional Minangkabau food such as rendang, sambal belacan, tempoyak and lemang.
Tourism[edit]
Tourist attractions in Negeri Sembilan include the historical city of Seremban, the coastal resort of Port Dickson, and the lush forests of the Titiwangsa Mountains.
