Neir's Tavern[edit | edit source]

Neir's Tavern is one of the oldest operating bars in the United States, located in the Woodhaven neighborhood of Queens, New York City. It was established in 1829 and has been serving patrons for nearly two centuries.

History[edit | edit source]

Neir's Tavern was founded by Cadwallader R. Colden, the manager of the Union Course racetrack. The tavern was initially known as "The Old Blue Pump House". It was later purchased by Louis Neir in 1898, who added a bowling alley, ballroom, and rooms for rent, renaming it "Neir's Social Hall".

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Neir's Tavern has been a significant part of New York's cultural history. It has been featured in several films and TV shows, including the classic 1990 film "Goodfellas". The tavern is also known for its famous patrons, including Mae West, who is rumored to have begun her career at Neir's.

Preservation Efforts[edit | edit source]

In recent years, Neir's Tavern has faced the threat of closure due to financial difficulties. However, efforts by the local community and city officials have kept the historic bar open. In 2020, the tavern celebrated its 190th anniversary.

Menu[edit | edit source]

Neir's Tavern offers a variety of food and drink options. The menu includes traditional pub fare, along with a selection of beers and spirits. The tavern is particularly known for its burger, dubbed the "Neir's Burger".
