Neknominate

Neknominate, also known as neck and nominate, neknomination or neck nomination, is an online drinking game. The original concept of this game was to film oneself drinking a pint of an alcoholic beverage, usually beer, in one gulp and upload the footage to the web. The participant would then nominate two others to do the same, although the nominated person is not obliged to participate.

Origin[edit | edit source]

The game is believed to have originated in Australia in early 2013. The term "neknominate" is derived from the word "neck", a British slang term for drinking a beverage quickly, and "nominate", in reference to the nomination of others to participate in the game.

Format[edit | edit source]

The format of the game, in its original form, involves the participant filming themselves drinking a pint of beer in one gulp. The video is then uploaded to a social media platform, such as Facebook or YouTube, and two other people are nominated to do the same. The nominated individuals have 24 hours to complete the challenge.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Neknominate has been met with widespread criticism and controversy. The game has been linked to a number of deaths due to excessive drinking. Health professionals, educators, and parents have expressed concern over the game's promotion of binge drinking and potential to lead to alcohol poisoning.

Legal Implications[edit | edit source]

In some jurisdictions, participants in Neknominate could potentially face legal consequences. For example, in the United Kingdom, individuals who encourage others to drink excessively could potentially face charges under the Licensing Act 2003.
