Nervous exhaustion
Nervous Exhaustion
Nervous exhaustion, also known as neurasthenia, is a psychological disorder characterized by chronic fatigue and weakness, loss of memory, and generalized aches and pains, formerly thought to result from exhaustion of the nervous system. The term was first used by American neurologist George Miller Beard in 1869.
History[edit | edit source]
The concept of nervous exhaustion has a long history, dating back to the ancient Greeks who believed in a condition they called melancholia, which was thought to be caused by an excess of black bile. In the 19th century, the term neurasthenia was coined by George Miller Beard to describe a condition of chronic mental and physical fatigue, nervousness, and irritability, associated with a variety of symptoms including headaches, muscle pain, and depression.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Symptoms of nervous exhaustion can vary greatly from person to person, but they often include chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and irritability. Other symptoms may include headaches, muscle pain, and a feeling of being overwhelmed by stress.
Causes[edit | edit source]
The exact cause of nervous exhaustion is not known, but it is thought to be related to chronic stress and overwork. Other factors that may contribute to the development of this condition include a lack of sleep, poor diet, and lack of physical activity.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for nervous exhaustion typically involves a combination of lifestyle changes, psychotherapy, and medication. Lifestyle changes may include improving sleep habits, eating a healthy diet, and incorporating regular physical activity into the daily routine. Psychotherapy can help individuals learn to manage stress and cope with the symptoms of nervous exhaustion. Medication, such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs, may also be prescribed to help manage symptoms.
