Newburyport is a historic coastal city located in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is situated on the north shore of the Merrimack River, approximately 35 miles northeast of Boston. With a population of 17,416 as of 2020, Newburyport is known for its rich history, vibrant downtown, and picturesque waterfront.

History[edit | edit source]

Newburyport was founded in 1764 by Francis Nicholson, an English military officer. The city quickly became a major center for shipbuilding and maritime trade, thanks to its strategic location on the Merrimack River. During the American Revolution, Newburyport played a significant role as a privateering hub, with many ships commissioned to raid British vessels.

In the 19th century, Newburyport experienced a period of economic decline due to the shift in trade routes and the decline of the shipbuilding industry. However, the city's historic architecture was preserved, and today it is recognized as a well-preserved example of a New England seaport town.

The downtown area of Newburyport is characterized by its narrow, winding streets and well-preserved Federal-style buildings. The waterfront, known as the "Boardwalk," offers stunning views of the river and is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

The Custom House Maritime Museum provides insight into the city's maritime history, showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to shipbuilding, trade, and the Coast Guard.
