Newfoundland
Newfoundland is a large island located off the east coast of the North American mainland, and the most populous part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has 29 percent of the province's land area. The island is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait. It blocks the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, creating the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the world's largest estuary. Newfoundland's nearest neighbour is the small French overseas community of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
History[edit | edit source]
The first inhabitants of Newfoundland were the Beothuk, an indigenous people. The Vikings were the first Europeans to have undisputed settlements in Newfoundland. John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto), commissioned by Henry VII of England, landed on the North East coast of North America in 1497. The exact location of his landing is unknown but the 500th anniversary of his landing was celebrated in Bonavista in 1997.
