Nguyễn Tri Phương (1800–1873) was a prominent Vietnamese general and mandarin of the Nguyễn dynasty. He is best known for his role in the defense of Hanoi during the Battle of Hanoi (1873) against the French.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Nguyễn Tri Phương was born in 1800 in Thừa Thiên-Huế Province, Vietnam. He came from a family with a strong military tradition and entered the service of the Nguyễn dynasty at a young age.

Military Career[edit | edit source]

Nguyễn Tri Phương quickly rose through the ranks due to his strategic acumen and leadership skills. He played a significant role in several military campaigns aimed at consolidating the power of the Nguyễn dynasty.

Defense of Hanoi[edit | edit source]

In 1873, Nguyễn Tri Phương was tasked with defending Hanoi against the advancing French forces. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, he organized a staunch defense. However, the Battle of Hanoi (1873) ended in a French victory, and Nguyễn Tri Phương was captured. He refused to cooperate with the French and later died in captivity.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Nguyễn Tri Phương is remembered as a national hero in Vietnam for his unwavering loyalty and bravery. Several streets and institutions in Vietnam are named in his honor.
