Nicotine salt

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Nicotine salt is a type of nicotine that forms naturally in leaf tobacco and is generally considered to be a more stable form of nicotine compared to the traditional freebase nicotine that is found in most e-cigarettes and vaporizers. Nicotine salts are created by adding certain types of acids to freebase nicotine which creates a highly absorbable and smooth form of nicotine.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Nicotine is a weak base and is primarily ionized in its natural state. On the other hand, nicotine salts are formed when nicotine base is reacted with an acid. This reaction reduces the pH level of the nicotine solution, leading to reduced alkalinity. This process makes the nicotine salt more stable and less likely to oxidize. It also makes it more bioavailable to the human body, allowing for better absorption into the bloodstream.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Nicotine salts are most commonly found in vaping products, particularly in e-liquids used in pod systems. These systems are designed for smokers transitioning into vaping. Because nicotine salts are in their natural state, they are much more easily absorbed into the body than freebase nicotine. As a result, nicotine salts are able to deliver a higher concentration of nicotine with a smoother throat hit, making them an attractive option for heavy smokers looking to quit.

Health Effects[edit | edit source]

While nicotine salts allow for higher concentrations of nicotine in vaping products, the health effects are believed to be comparable to traditional cigarettes due to the higher absorption rate. However, more research is needed to fully understand the potential health impacts of nicotine salts.

Regulation[edit | edit source]

In many countries, including the United States, nicotine salts are regulated in the same way as traditional nicotine products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies nicotine salts as a tobacco product, and therefore they are subject to the same restrictions as other tobacco products.
