Niles is a city located in Cook County, in the state of Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, situated approximately 15 miles northwest of the city's downtown area.

Niles was incorporated in 1899. The origin of the name "Niles" is not definitively known, but it is believed to be named after Niles, Michigan, or possibly after Hezekiah Niles, the editor of Niles' Weekly Register, a Baltimore newspaper.

As of the 2020 census, Niles has a population of 30,912. The city is known for its diverse community, with a significant number of residents of Polish, Korean, and Indian descent.

Niles has a mixed economy with a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several shopping centers, including the Golf Mill Shopping Center.

Education[edit | edit source]

Niles is served by several school districts, including Maine Township High School District 207 and Niles Township High School District 219. The city is also home to Oakton Community College.

Notable Landmarks[edit | edit source]

One of the most notable landmarks in Niles is the Leaning Tower of Niles, a half-sized replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. It was built in 1934 by industrialist Robert Ilg as part of a recreation park for employees of the Ilg Hot Air Electric Ventilating Company.

Niles is served by several major roads, including U.S. Route 14 and Illinois Route 21. Public transportation is provided by the Chicago Transit Authority and Pace Suburban Bus.

Niles has a sister city relationship with Pisa, Italy, due to the presence of the Leaning Tower of Niles.
