Nobel prize
Nobel Prize
The Nobel Prize is a set of prestigious international awards given annually in several categories. They are established by the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. Nobel Prizes are awarded in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences. The Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature are awarded by Swedish institutions, while the Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
History[edit | edit source]
The Nobel Prizes were established by the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel, which dictates that the awards should be given to those who "during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind". Nobel's will stated that the prizes should be divided equally, without discrimination due to nationality.
Award process[edit | edit source]
The Nobel laureates are selected by their respective committees. The Nobel laureates in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Economic Sciences are selected by Swedish institutions, while the Peace Prize laureates are selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Prizes[edit | edit source]
Each Nobel Prize consists of a medal, a diploma, and a cash award, which varies each year. The Nobel laureates receive their prizes at a ceremony in Stockholm, except for the Peace Prize, which is presented in Oslo.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
The Nobel Prizes have been criticised for various reasons. Some critics argue that they are not representative of all fields of achievement, while others argue that the selection process is biased.
