Retroaortic lymph nodes
(Redirected from Nodi lymphoidei retroaortici)
Retroaortic lymph nodes are a group of lymph nodes located behind the aorta, the largest artery in the human body. These lymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in the body's immune response by filtering harmful substances and aiding in the production of lymphocytes.
Anatomy and Location[edit | edit source]
The retroaortic lymph nodes are situated in the retroperitoneal space, which is the anatomical area behind the peritoneum. They are specifically located posterior to the abdominal aorta, near the vertebral column. These lymph nodes are part of the larger group of abdominal lymph nodes, which also includes the para-aortic lymph nodes, mesenteric lymph nodes, and iliac lymph nodes.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the retroaortic lymph nodes is to filter lymphatic fluid from the abdominal organs, including the intestines, kidneys, and adrenal glands. They help in trapping and destroying pathogens, cancer cells, and other foreign particles. The filtered lymph is then returned to the circulatory system.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Retroaortic lymph nodes can become enlarged due to various medical conditions, such as infections, lymphoma, and metastatic cancer. Enlargement of these lymph nodes can be detected through imaging techniques like CT scans and MRIs. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to determine the underlying cause of the enlargement.
Related Conditions[edit | edit source]
- Lymphadenopathy: This is a condition characterized by the enlargement of lymph nodes, which can affect the retroaortic lymph nodes.
- Lymphoma: A type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system and can involve the retroaortic lymph nodes.
- Metastasis: The spread of cancer cells from a primary site to other parts of the body, including the retroaortic lymph nodes.
