Norman Topping
Norman Topping (1908–1997) was an American physician and academic administrator, best known for his tenure as the President of the University of Southern California (USC) from 1958 to 1970. His leadership significantly transformed USC into a major research university.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Norman Topping was born in New York City in 1908. He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his medical degree, Topping worked at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he contributed to significant medical research. He later served as the director of the Division of Research Grants at the NIH.
University of Southern California[edit | edit source]
In 1958, Topping was appointed as the President of the University of Southern California. During his presidency, he initiated a comprehensive fundraising campaign, which significantly increased the university's endowment. His efforts led to the expansion of the university's physical campus and the establishment of several new academic programs and research centers.
Under Topping's leadership, USC saw a rise in its academic reputation and research output. He was instrumental in the development of the Health Sciences Campus, which houses the Keck School of Medicine, the School of Pharmacy, and other health-related programs.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Norman Topping's tenure as president is often credited with laying the foundation for USC's emergence as a leading research university. The Norman Topping Student Aid Fund, established in his honor, continues to provide financial assistance to students from underrepresented backgrounds.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Topping was married and had three children. He passed away in 1997.
