It is located in the northwest of the country and bordered by the North Sea to the west and north, the IJsselmeer to the east, and the provinces of South Holland and Utrecht to the south. The province's capital and largest city is Haarlem, while its most populous municipality is Amsterdam, which is also the capital of the Netherlands.

North Holland is known for its diverse landscapes, including beaches, dunes, polders, and dykes. The region is divided into two parts by the North Sea Canal, which connects the North Sea to the IJsselmeer, facilitating international maritime traffic. The province encompasses several islands, including Texel, which is the largest and most populous of the West Frisian Islands.
