North Korea

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia, located in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is bordered by China and Russia to the north, and by South Korea to the south. The country's capital and largest city is Pyongyang.

History[edit | edit source]

North Korea was established in 1948 following the division of Korea into two separate states, with the northern half coming under Soviet-backed communist control. The Korean War (1950-1953) saw North Korea, supported by China and the Soviet Union, fighting against South Korea, backed by the United Nations and primarily the United States. The war ended in an armistice, but not a peace treaty, leaving North Korea technically still at war with South Korea.

Politics[edit | edit source]

North Korea is a single-party state governed by the Korean Workers' Party (KWP). The country's government follows the ideology of Juche, a form of Korean nationalism developed by the country's first leader, Kim Il-sung. The current leader is Kim Jong-un, the grandson of Kim Il-sung.

Economy[edit | edit source]

North Korea has a centrally planned economy, with all industry owned by the state and all agriculture collectivized. The country has been heavily sanctioned by the international community due to its nuclear weapons program, which has had a significant impact on its economy.

Society[edit | edit source]

North Korean society is highly regimented, with the government controlling many aspects of life, including employment, education, and the media. The country has been criticized for its human rights record, with reports of widespread abuses and restrictions on freedom of speech and movement.
