North Dakota is a U.S. state located in the Midwest and Northern regions of the United States. It is the 19th largest in area, the 4th smallest by population, and the 4th most sparsely populated of the 50 states. North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, along with its neighboring state, South Dakota.

Geography[edit | edit source]

North Dakota is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the north, the states of Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, and Montana to the west. The state's high point is White Butte at 3,506 feet (1,069 m), and the lowest point is the Red River of the North at 750 feet (229 m).

The economy of North Dakota is primarily based on agriculture, energy, food processing, and technology. North Dakota has a strong economy with a job growth rate of 5.2%. The state has the third lowest unemployment rate in the nation at 2.6%.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of 2019, the population of North Dakota was estimated to be 762,062. The racial makeup of the state is predominantly white, with a significant Native American population.

North Dakota has a strong education system with a high school graduation rate of 88.6%. The state is home to several higher education institutions, including the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University.

North Dakota's culture is deeply rooted in its Native American and Scandinavian heritage. The state is known for its friendly and welcoming people, as well as its outdoor recreational opportunities.

Government[edit | edit source]

North Dakota is a U.S. state and, as such, its government structure is set up by the North Dakota Constitution. The government consists of three branches: the executive branch, headed by the Governor of North Dakota; the legislative branch, which consists of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly; and the judicial branch, headed by the North Dakota Supreme Court.
