Norwegian Forest Cat
Norwegian Forest Cat
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a breed of domestic cat originating in Northern Europe. This natural breed is adapted to a very cold climate, with a top coat of glossy, long, water-shedding hairs and a woolly undercoat for insulation.
History[edit | edit source]
The Norwegian Forest Cat is adapted to survive Norway's cold weather. Its ancestors may include black and white short-hair cats brought to Norway from Great Britain some time after 1000 AD by the Vikings, and long-haired cats brought to Norway by Crusaders. These cats could have reproduced with farm and feral stock and may have eventually evolved into the modern-day Norwegian Forest breed.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Norwegian Forest Cats have a thick fluffy double-layered coat, tufted ears and a long bushy tail to protect them against the cold. Their almond-shaped eyes can be any color. The breed has a strong body shape and is known for its climbing ability.
Temperament[edit | edit source]
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a very intelligent breed with a gentle temperament. They are generally good with children and other pets, making them suitable as family pets. They are known for their climbing and hunting skills, and they enjoy outdoor activities.
Health[edit | edit source]
Norwegian Forest Cats have a lifespan of 14 to 16 years. While they are generally healthy, they are prone to certain genetic health problems such as glycogen storage disease type IV, hip dysplasia, and polycystic kidney disease. Regular veterinary check-ups and a balanced diet can help to maintain their health.
Care[edit | edit source]
The Norwegian Forest Cat's thick coat is relatively easy to groom, but it can become matted if not brushed regularly. They are active and playful and require plenty of physical and mental stimulation.
Recognition[edit | edit source]
The Norwegian Forest Cat is recognized by national and international cat registries, including the American Cat Fanciers Association and the International Cat Association.
