Norwegian Nurses Organisation (NNO) (Norwegian: Norsk Sykepleierforbund) is a professional association and trade union for nurses in Norway. It was established in 1912 and has since played a significant role in advocating for the rights, working conditions, and professional development of nurses in the country.

History[edit | edit source]

The Norwegian Nurses Organisation was founded on September 24, 1912, by a group of nurses who recognized the need for a unified body to represent their interests. The organization has grown significantly over the years and now represents a large proportion of the nursing workforce in Norway.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary objectives of the NNO include:

  • Advocating for the professional and economic interests of nurses.
  • Promoting high standards of nursing education and practice.
  • Ensuring safe and fair working conditions for nurses.
  • Influencing health policy to improve healthcare services in Norway.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in the NNO is open to all registered nurses in Norway. The organization provides various benefits to its members, including legal assistance, professional development opportunities, and access to a wide range of resources and support services.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The NNO is structured into several regional branches, each representing nurses in different parts of Norway. The organization is governed by a national board, which is elected by the members. The board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization and overseeing its activities.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The NNO engages in a variety of activities to support its members and advance the nursing profession. These activities include:

  • Negotiating collective agreements on behalf of nurses.
  • Providing continuing education and professional development programs.
  • Conducting research on nursing and healthcare issues.
  • Advocating for policies that improve healthcare services and the working conditions of nurses.

Publications[edit | edit source]

The NNO publishes a range of materials to keep its members informed about developments in the nursing profession and healthcare sector. These include journals, newsletters, and reports on various topics related to nursing and healthcare.
