Nulato

Nulato is a city located in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 Census, the population of the city was 264. Nulato was a location for trade between the Koyukon people and Inupiat people of the North Slope. In 1838, the Russian American Company established a trading post in Nulato.

The Athabascan people have lived in the region for thousands of years. The Nulato site represented a significant point for trade between the Athabascans and the Inupiat. The Russian American Company built a trading post in Nulato in 1838. After the purchase of Alaska by the United States in 1867, the Alaska Commercial Company took over the assets of the Russian America Company, including Nulato.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Nulato is located at 64°43′48″N 158°6′51″W (64.730011, -158.114101). The city is on the west bank of the Yukon River, 53 km (35 miles) west of Galena, in the Nulato Hills. It is across the Yukon River from the Innoko National Wildlife Refuge.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

Nulato is served by a clinic, the Nulato Village Clinic, managed by the Tanana Chiefs Conference. The clinic has a full-time health aide. The nearest hospitals are in Fairbanks and Anchorage.

Education[edit | edit source]

The Yukon-Koyukuk School District operates the Andrew K. Demoski School in Nulato. It serves grades Pre-K through 12.
