Nummela Sanatorium

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Nummela Sanatorium was a sanatorium located in Nummela, a village in the municipality of Vihti, Finland. The sanatorium was established in the early 20th century to treat patients suffering from tuberculosis, a common and deadly infectious disease at the time.

History[edit | edit source]

The Nummela Sanatorium was founded in 1930, during a period when tuberculosis was a significant public health issue in Finland and many other parts of the world. The sanatorium was designed to provide a serene and healthy environment for patients, with ample access to fresh air and sunlight, which were believed to be beneficial in the treatment of tuberculosis.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The architecture of Nummela Sanatorium was influenced by the Modernist movement, which emphasized functionality, simplicity, and the use of new materials and construction techniques. The building featured large windows, open terraces, and spacious rooms to maximize natural light and ventilation.

Operations[edit | edit source]

During its years of operation, Nummela Sanatorium provided medical care, rest, and rehabilitation for tuberculosis patients. The treatment regimen included a combination of rest, nutritious food, and medical therapies such as pneumothorax and surgical procedures.

Decline and Closure[edit | edit source]

With the advent of effective antibiotics in the mid-20th century, the incidence of tuberculosis began to decline, and the need for sanatoriums decreased. Nummela Sanatorium eventually closed its doors in the 1960s as tuberculosis became a less prevalent health issue.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The legacy of Nummela Sanatorium remains in the history of public health and the fight against tuberculosis in Finland. The building itself has been repurposed for various uses over the years, reflecting the changing needs of the community.
