Indonesian physician and politician
Oen Boen Ing (1894 – 1982) was a prominent Indonesian physician and political figure known for his contributions to healthcare and his involvement in the political landscape of Indonesia during the early 20th century. He played a significant role in the development of medical services in Surakarta and was an advocate for the rights of the Chinese Indonesian community.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Oen Boen Ing was born in 1894 in Surakarta, Central Java, which was then part of the Dutch East Indies. He was of Chinese Indonesian descent, a community that faced various social and political challenges during the colonial period. Oen pursued his medical education at the STOVIA (School tot Opleiding van Indische Artsen) in Batavia, now known as Jakarta. This institution was one of the few avenues for higher education available to native Indonesians and those of Chinese descent at the time.

After completing his studies, Oen Boen Ing returned to Surakarta, where he established a medical practice. He was known for his dedication to providing healthcare to the underserved populations in the region. His work extended beyond his private practice as he became involved in various public health initiatives.
Oen was instrumental in founding the Rumah Sakit Panti Kosala, a hospital that served the local community. His efforts in healthcare were not limited to treatment; he also focused on preventive measures and health education, aiming to improve the overall well-being of the population.
Political Involvement[edit | edit source]
In addition to his medical career, Oen Boen Ing was active in politics. He was a member of the Chung Hsioh organization, which was involved in advocating for the rights and interests of the Chinese Indonesian community. His political activities were driven by a desire to improve the social and economic conditions of his community and to promote greater integration and equality within Indonesian society.

Oen Boen Ing's contributions to both medicine and politics left a lasting impact on Indonesian society. His work in healthcare helped lay the foundation for modern medical practices in the region, and his advocacy for the Chinese Indonesian community contributed to the broader movement for independence and equality in Indonesia.
