Ohio State University (officially The Ohio State University, commonly referred to as Ohio State or OSU) is a large, primarily residential, public university located in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870 as a land-grant university and the ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College.

History[edit | edit source]

The university was originally proposed in the mid-1860s by Senator Morrill to provide a new kind of education to the people of Ohio, focusing on modern languages, engineering, and agriculture, rather than the classical curriculum offered by other Ohio universities at the time. The proposal was met with approval by the Ohio General Assembly, which passed legislation creating the university in 1870.

Campus[edit | edit source]

The main campus in Columbus has since grown into the third-largest university campus in the United States. The university also operates regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

Academics[edit | edit source]

Ohio State is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". The university offers over 200 undergraduate majors, as well as a variety of graduate and professional programs. Ohio State's College of Medicine is one of the top medical schools in the United States.

Athletics[edit | edit source]

Ohio State's athletic teams are known as the "Buckeyes", named after the state tree of Ohio. The Buckeyes participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I in all sports and the Big Ten Conference in most sports.

Notable alumni[edit | edit source]

Ohio State has over 500,000 living alumni around the world. Notable alumni include George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees; Jack Nicklaus, professional golfer; and R. L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series.
