Solandt was born in Toronto, Canada in 1909. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1931, followed by a Master of Arts in 1932. He then pursued a Ph.D. in physiology at the University of Cambridge in England, which he completed in 1935.

Upon returning to Canada, Solandt joined the faculty at the University of Toronto as a lecturer in physiology. During World War II, he served as a military scientist and played a key role in the development of military research programs. After the war, he continued his research in physiology and biophysics, focusing on areas such as muscle contraction and nerve function.
