Opuntia littoralis
Opuntia littoralis, commonly known as the coastal prickly pear, is a species of cactus native to the coastal regions of southwestern United States and Mexico. This species is part of the Opuntia genus, which is characterized by its flat, fleshy pads that are covered in spines. The flowers of Opuntia littoralis are yellow, sometimes with a red center, and bloom in late spring to early summer. The fruit is a red to purple berry, edible and sweet when ripe.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
This species is found along the coastal regions of California in the United States, extending south into Baja California in Mexico. It thrives in sandy, well-drained soils in coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats, often within close proximity to the ocean. Opuntia littoralis is adapted to a Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
