Oramorph sr

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Oramorph SR is a specific brand of morphine sulfate, a potent opioid medication used to treat severe, ongoing pain that cannot be controlled with other medicines. It is a long-acting (sustained-release) opioid pain medicine that can put you at risk for overdose and death.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Morphine is a narcotic analgesic. The principal actions of therapeutic value are analgesia and sedation. Oramorph SR acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain. It binds to the mu-opioid receptors in the CNS, which leads to a decrease in the perception of pain.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Oramorph SR is indicated for the management of pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and for which alternative treatment options are inadequate.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Oramorph SR is contraindicated in patients with significant respiratory depression, acute or severe bronchial asthma in an unmonitored setting or in the absence of resuscitative equipment, known or suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, and hypersensitivity to morphine.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Oramorph SR include constipation, nausea, sleepiness, vomiting, tiredness, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, and sweating. Serious side effects may include life-threatening respiratory depression and addiction, abuse, and misuse, which can lead to overdose and death.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Oramorph SR may interact with other CNS depressants, mixed agonist/antagonist and partial agonist opioid analgesics, MAOIs, and other drugs that affect the serotonergic neurotransmitter systems.
