Epoophoron

Epoophoron is a remnant of the mesonephric duct that can be found in the human female. It is located in the broad ligament of the uterus, between the uterus and the ovary.

Etymology

The term "epoophoron" comes from the Greek words "epi" (meaning "upon") and "oophoron" (meaning "egg-bearing"). It was first used in the late 19th century.

Anatomy

The epoophoron consists of a few tubules that are lined by ciliated columnar epithelium, and it is situated in the mesosalpinx along with the paroophoron. These tubules are remnants of the mesonephric tubules that can be found in the male, where they develop into the seminiferous tubules.

Clinical significance

In some cases, the epoophoron may give rise to a cyst, known as an epoophoron cyst. This can cause pelvic pain and other symptoms, and may require surgical treatment.
