Paroophoron

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Paroophoron is a small collection of sex cord stromal cells found in the human female reproductive system. It is a remnant of the mesonephric duct (Wolffian duct) that can be found in the broad ligament of the uterus.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The paroophoron lies in the mesosalpinx portion of the broad ligament, between the epoophoron and the ovary. It is a remnant of the mesonephric duct, which in males develops into the seminal vesicle and vas deferens. In females, most of the mesonephric duct degenerates except for the epoophoron, paroophoron, and Gartner's duct.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

While the paroophoron is typically asymptomatic and does not cause any health issues, it can occasionally give rise to a paroophoritic cyst. These cysts are usually small and asymptomatic, but can occasionally cause pain or discomfort.
