Outline of cannabis
Outline of Cannabis is a comprehensive overview and navigational guide to the subject of Cannabis, a group of flowering plants that includes three different species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis.
Introduction[edit | edit source]
Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Cannabaceae. The number of species within the genus is disputed. Three species may be recognized: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. The plant is also known as hemp, although this term is often used to refer only to varieties of Cannabis cultivated for non-drug use.
Uses of Cannabis[edit | edit source]
Cannabis has various uses including recreational, medicinal, and industrial.
Recreational Use[edit | edit source]
Recreational use of cannabis involves using the plant for its psychoactive effects. The main psychoactive part of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), one of the 483 known compounds in the plant, including at least 65 other cannabinoids.
Medicinal Use[edit | edit source]
Medical cannabis, or medical marijuana, is cannabis and cannabinoids that are prescribed by physicians for their patients. The use of cannabis as medicine has not been rigorously tested due to production and governmental restrictions, resulting in limited clinical research.
Industrial Use[edit | edit source]
Industrial cannabis, or hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial use. It can be used to produce a wide range of products including, but not limited to, textiles, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of cannabis varies widely from country to country, and from state to state in the United States. In some jurisdictions, it is illegal to sell, possess, or use cannabis. In others, it is legal for medical use, and in some, it is fully legal for both medical and recreational use.
