Ovarian cortex

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ovarian Cortex

The Ovarian Cortex is the outermost layer of the ovary, a female reproductive organ. It is a crucial part of the female reproductive system and plays a significant role in the process of ovulation.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The ovarian cortex is a dense, fibrous layer that surrounds the inner part of the ovary, known as the ovarian medulla. The cortex is primarily composed of connective tissue and contains the ovarian follicles, which house the oocytes or immature eggs.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the ovarian cortex is to protect and support the developing follicles. During each menstrual cycle, a few follicles are activated for potential ovulation. The cortex also plays a role in the release of the mature egg during ovulation.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The health of the ovarian cortex is crucial for female fertility. Conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) can affect the health and function of the ovarian cortex, leading to fertility issues.

Research and Future Directions[edit | edit source]

Research is ongoing to better understand the ovarian cortex and its role in female fertility. This includes studies on the potential for ovarian cortex transplantation in women who have lost fertility due to conditions such as cancer.
