PEG (Polyethylene Glycol)

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polymer made from ethylene oxide units. It is a versatile compound used in a variety of applications, including medical and pharmaceutical uses. PEG is non-toxic, non-immunogenic, and biocompatible, making it suitable for use in many medical applications.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

PEG is used in a variety of medical applications due to its unique properties. It is used as a laxative in over-the-counter products such as MiraLAX and GlycoLax. It works by drawing water into the intestine, which softens the stool and increases the frequency of bowel movements.

In addition to its use as a laxative, PEG is also used in the preparation of colonoscopy procedures. It is used to cleanse the bowel prior to the procedure, ensuring a clear view of the colon during the examination.

PEG is also used in pharmaceutical applications. It is used as a solvent, plasticizer, surfactant, and ointment and suppository base. It is also used in the manufacture of capsules, tablets, and liquid oral medications.

Pharmaceutical Uses[edit | edit source]

In the pharmaceutical industry, PEG is used as an excipient, a substance added to the drug to improve its characteristics. It is used to improve the solubility and bioavailability of drugs, and to increase their stability and shelf life.

PEG is also used in the formulation of parenteral (injectable) medications. It is used to increase the solubility of drugs, to improve their stability, and to reduce their toxicity.

In addition, PEG is used in the manufacture of prodrugs. These are drugs that are inactive in their administered form and are converted into their active form in the body. PEG is used to link the active drug to a carrier molecule, which improves its solubility and bioavailability.

Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]

PEG is generally considered safe for use in medical and pharmaceutical applications. However, like all substances, it can cause side effects in some people. These can include nausea, bloating, cramping, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it can cause an allergic reaction.
